Destructive Distractions: How To Complete Meaningful Work in the Digital Age
When I go to restaurants, I see entire families staring down at their phones. They may take a bite here and a sip there, but you can tell they're not really present.
I wish I could say this was rare, but it's happening more and more in our society. With so many shiny social media applications, it's hard for people to stay focused on, well, anything at all.
That's why today, I want to point out some of these distractions and how to begin removing them. Let's begin.
The Social Media Addiction Distraction
Did you know in South Korea, there is actually a company that helps teens overcome addiction to Social Media?
It's so rampant there; kids ranging from younger to teenagers are battling literal dopaminergic addictions. Here in the United States, it's just as bad if not worse. Kids want more screen time and more stimulation.
Teenagers can't miss a single notification without losing their cool. And adults are staring at emails and some of these same applications awaiting a new notification.
But listen up, we have goals, businesses, families, friends, and people to see and places to go. We simply can't live like this.
Here's the plan to remove email, social media, and non-urgent requests from killing your daily workflow:
1. Do a ratio of work to pleasure
- When you're working, make sure you're going all in and not focused on anything else. I suggest 90-minute sprints (Scrum framework).
- Set timers ranging from 10 minutes to 20 minutes to help keep you accountable.
2. Prioritize Executive Tasks
- Avoid spending excessive time on remedial tasks.
- Instead of spending weeks or months on tasks with little ROI, focus on:
- Creating your products
- Testing advertisements
- Conducting market research
- Getting a sales pipeline established
- Hiring a VA
- Creating your systems for scalability
3. Conclusion
Distractions are real and can be hard to navigate, but it's important to recognize them and have a plan. We will be creating a Discord group soon to help you even more.
Thank you for being a subscriber we appreciate you and hope you got some value from this!
